Bias Winding and Components

Use the Bias design form to view and edit bias parameters.

Bias Winding Requirements by Product

A bias winding is optional for some PI devices:

PI Product Family

Bias Winding

DPA-Switch

Required

TOPSwitch-HX

TOPSwitch-GX

TOPSwitch-JX

LinkSwitch-PH

LinkSwitch-PL*

Recommended for dimming designs

TinySwitch-II

Optional

TinySwitch-III

TinySwitch-4

LinkSwitch-CV

LinkSwitch-XT

*For non-dimming designs external biasing is not required, but this may reduce system efficiency. Because LinkSwitch-PL uses a non-isolated flyback topology, a dedicated bias trace is often not necessary, as the main output can be used.

When creating a new design, PI Expert selects a feedback type based on the specified PI product family:

PI Product Family

Default Feedback Type

DPA-Switch

Secondary side TL431 and optocoupler

TOPSwitch-HX

TOPSwitch-GX

TOPSwitch-JX

TinySwitch-II

  Secondary Zener

TinySwitch-III

TinySwitch-4

LinkSwitch-XT

LinkSwitch-CV

Feedback Winding

LinkSwitch-PH

Indirect CC

LinkSwitch-PL

Direct Secondary

Editing Voltage and Current Values

When creating a design, depending on the selected PI Device family, PI Expert calculates the Voltage and Current values for the bias winding.

To edit the calculated parameter, click the icon on the right of the parameter box. The icon now indicates that the custom parameter value is entered. Click the  icon once again to restore the automatically calculated value.

Bias Winding Capacitor, Diode and Resistor

When creating a design, depending on the selected PI Device family, PI Expert selects the bias capacitor and the bias diode. For LinkSwitch and TinySwitch families a bias resistor is included.

To change the bias capacitor, diode or resistor  in the Component box click the black down arrow control on the right of the calculator icon and select Change. Select a capacitor or diode from the active Component Set (see also Component Library and Component Sets Overview).

For bias resistor the External Bias Resistor for PI device dialog box opens. In this dialog click the calculator icon to edit the resistor parameters.

The icon will indicate that a custom component has been is chosen. To restore the default components click the black down arrow control on the right of the icon and click Default.
